Filipino Sweet Style Spaghetti

Filipino Sweet Style Spaghetti

There is nothing Italian about this pasta dish. I hate to admit this is such an unhealthy pasta dish because Filipinos love everything sweet from A to Z. I grew up with this Filipino sweet style spaghetti love it or fucking hate I don’t even know if this is a fusion of American / Italian / Filipino who fucking knows.

Kids love this spaghetti so much that every birthday party I attend to and all the school cafeterias around the Philippines serve this. What sets apart from this Filipino style spaghetti is this red hotdogs, still for me an unsolved mystery about my beloved Philippines.

To this day no matter how I love Italian pasta dishes, this sweet style Filipino spaghetti remains my favourite comfort food, especially everytime I have a massive hangover from a late morning drinking spree. Banana catsup here and Filipino hot-dogs are the main ingredients of Filipino style spaghetti and they are difficult to find outside the Philippines. I’ve used tomato ketchup and added sugar to balance that delicious sweet and savoury Filipino spaghetti and for the Filipino hot-dogs I’ve used a normal American hot-dog. You can also substitute it with ham, spam, Vienna sausage, Dutch worst or Dutch sausage.

And here is my take on a Filipino favourite Filipino sweet style spaghetti recipe down below enjoy!!!

Serves: 4 Cooking Time: 45M

  • 1 pound uncooked spaghettini
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 4 American style hotdogs, sliced diagonally
  • 1 medium onion, peeled and diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, peeled and minced
  • 1 bell pepper, seeded, cored and chopped
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 2 cups tomato ketchup
  • 2 cups tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup quick-melt cheese, shredded

In a pot over medium heat, cook spaghetti in salted boiling water according to package's direction for about 7 to 9 minutes or until firm to bite. Drain well.

In a large saucepan, heat oil. Add sliced hot dogs and cook, stirring occasionally, for about 1 to 2 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove from pan and set aside.

Add onions, garlic, and bell peppers to pan. Cook until softened. Add ground beef and cook, stirring occasionally and breaking into small pieces, for about 7 to 10 minutes until lightly browned. Drain any excess fat.

Add tomato ketchup, tomato sauce, tomato paste, and beef broth. Stir in sugar. Bring to a boil and then lower heat to simmer, covered, for about one hour or until meat is fully cooked and sauce is thickened. If sauce is getting too thick, add water in 1/2 cup increments as needed.

During the last 10 minutes of cooking, add browned hot dogs. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

To serve, spoon spaghetti sauce over noodles and top with shredded cheese.
